Before we dive in, I had a little chat with Dan first and asked her all about her love for the art of knotting and her journey to becoming such a talented Macrame teacher!

Meet Macrame Teacher Dan Soliman

Hi everyone! I’m Dan Soliman, from the Philippines. I’m an advertising project manager by day and a Macrame artist and teacher by night.

I love how Macrame allows me to relax and meditate plus it’s the perfect outlet to channel my creativity!

What was your process in becoming a Macrame artist?
About 3 years ago, I got really fascinated with air plants or Tillandsia. I found a lot of tutorials on Youtube on how to make plant hangers for my air plant, so I decided to give it a try and totally fell in love with the craft!

When there was no more room in my home to hang any of my macrame plant hangers, I decided it was time to open my online store Habit Made.

What do you love most about Macrame?
What I enjoy most about Macrame is the intricate patterns and the handmade aesthetic of this craft. Especially in this modern age of manufactured products.

I see endless possibilities in doing Macrame, from home decorations to more practical items like tumbler holders, bags, and hammocks for example.

What Macrame project are you most proud of?
One of the projects I’m most proud of is the Habit’s Made Macrame bottle holder I created. The Sonder Tumbler Holder supports the BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) initiative which encourages people to live more consciously by bringing their own water container.

You can order this gorgeous bottle holder by shooting me a message on my Instagram and Facebook!

What’s your favorite material to work with?
I work mostly with natural 5mm cotton Macrame cords. I buy all my materials from a local supplier here in the Philippines.

What inspires you to make these gorgeous projects?
When I need some inspiration for a project, I love to look at interior design websites to get the latest trends and modernize my work.

When I create a wall hanging or decorative piece for a client, I think of designs that fit the person’s personality and style. I also always make sure I know where the piece will be displayed to match their interior.

Do you have a favorite Macrame artist?
I really like Sally England. Her knotting style is so unique and I love the complexity of the patterns she creates.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching Macrame on YouTube?
My favorite thing about teaching Macrame on YouTube is that it allows me to connect with other fellow makers from all over the world and I get to share my love for knotting.

I feel so fulfilled when I read messages from people that I was able to help them create something beautiful. This definitely motivates me to teach and share more!

What are your best tips for beginners?
Don’t be afraid to experiment! The items you can create are limitless, even when you’re a beginner. And when you’re stuck, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help.

One amazing thing about this craft is the very supportive community that comes with it. You can find me, and many other makers and teachers in the Macrame for Beginners Facebook Group ready to help you out with all your questions!
